The acne facial problem

Acne, also known as acne vulgaris, is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that occurs when hair follicles get clogged with oil from the skin and dead skin cells. It causes pimples, blackheads, whiteheads or oily skin. It primarily affects and appears on face, forehead, chest, back and shoulders where oil glands are very active. It is very common among teenagers during puberty but it can occur at any age. It is not dangerous, but in severe cases, it can scar the skin. Acne can also lead to emotional distress, anxiety and affects self-esteem.

Contrary to popular myth, Acne is not caused by bacteria. But bacteria play a role in its development. Factors that may trigger or aggravate acne are

  • Hormonal imbalance – primarily due to hyper active “androgenic” hormones especially during the puberty
  • Highly active oil glands
  • Certain medications containing corticosteroids, testosterone or lithium may cause flare ups or worsen acne
  • Pollution
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Hot and humid climates
  • Excessive use of oil-based make-up
  • Hormonal fluctuations preceding and during menstruation
  • Polycystic ovary disease (PCOS)

The problem can be contained to a great extent by taking precautionary measures like keeping the skin clean, taking healthy & balanced diet and avoiding oil based skin products. But acne can be persistent at times. If self-care remedies or over the counter medicines don't help, one should seek medical treatment. Acne also tends to leave behind a dark mark or scar on the skin. These scars can be very stubborn and should be treated sooner than later.

At our clinic, we evaluate and diagnose the problem and advise proper acne treatment to reduce or eliminate the condition. The emphasis of the treatment is to stop the triggering factor and address the issue of acne scars and pigmentation. In case of young patients and mild acne, we generally use conservative & basic treatment including a good cleanser and topical medicines. Patients with severe acne may require oral medication including anti-biotic & retinoid or in-clinic procedures like Chemical Peels, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), Micro-needling, Microdermabrasion, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), Photo-rejuvenation, Laser etc. which may enhance and speed up the recovery.
